In Smolensk during excavations on the territory of the district Rachivka archeologists discovered unique artifacts of an ancient culture. Now experts believe that in the middle ages the city was much larger than previously thought. In General, the history of Smolensk is full of mysteries. For example, nobody knows by whom and when the town was founded. These facts contained in the chronicle, destroyed in the middle Ages. So sensational findings help to restore the gaps in history and to understand how bright was the life of the ancient settlement.

Finds made this season, show that Smolensk was rapidly developing in the early middle ages and by the eleventh century, was already large, rich and populous settlement. According to the revised data, the city stretched no less than two kilometers along the Dnieper river.
