Archaeological excavations of the ancient settlement of Lucentum (Tossal de Manises)

Those who want to know the origins of the Spanish city of Alicante should also visit one of the sights of Alicante – Lucentum (Lucentum). This archaeological site of an ancient Roman. This place is located on the top of the hill El de Tossal at a height of 38 meters and 3.5 km from the centre of Alicante. The ancient city covers a huge area, component 7. But the excavations produced only on the territory of 2.5 hectares.

In this place approximately in 215 BC, there was a city of ACRA Leuca. And the artifacts that are here today, show that the architecture in those years was exposed to Carthaginian influence. Having existed before the 2nd century BC this city as a result of one of the Punic wars was captured by the Romans led by Publius Cornelia stsipionom. They rebuilt it and named Lucentum, which means in translation “the city of bright lights”. At the turn of the eras, the city reached the peak of its prosperity. But in 2-3 century ad it was abandoned because it could not compete with the nearby city of Ilici, referred to today as Elche. And then it was used as a cemetery for Muslims (5-6 century ad). Despite the fact that in recent years managed to achieve restrictions in the trade of ancient objects, black archaeology still remains an urgent problem in Latvia. Some archaeologists even came to the conclusion that illegal diggers have become even bessovestnoi: archaeological sites, especially cemeteries, left behind in a terrible state.

Recently, archaeologists have summarized the latest research in Latvia. For two years managed to find a flaming cemetery, the settlement of the Mesolithic, underground tavern in Tukums, a settlement of the bronze age and others, reports the Latvian portal lsm.lv .

It took a year and a half after the entry into force of the amendments to the law “About protection of monuments of culture”, according to which all the found ancient objects, Dating from the 17th century (and earlier), belong to the state and should be kept in museums. Ancient archaeological values are protected monuments, and if somebody finds a new ancient place, it must inform the State Inspectorate for protection of monuments of culture. Continue reading

During excavations in Smolensk discovered important artifacts

In Smolensk during excavations on the territory of the district Rachivka archeologists discovered unique artifacts of an ancient culture. Now experts believe that in the middle ages the city was much larger than previously thought. In General, the history of Smolensk is full of mysteries. For example, nobody knows by whom and when the town was founded. These facts contained in the chronicle, destroyed in the middle Ages. So sensational findings help to restore the gaps in history and to understand how bright was the life of the ancient settlement.

The researchers found a waste pit production jewellery workshop the beginning of the XI century, with baptismal crosses, temporal rings and tools. Discoveries followed one after the other. Once it was a manufacturing defect, now this is a unique artifacts that will help to understand how production was organized.

Crucibles are vessels, into which melted bronze. After that, the liquid metal poured into the mold, previously cut by jewelers. The specialists of the Hermitage and explored the wire used by Smolensk masters. It turned out that the metal is jewelers, you are most likely imported. Continue reading
